Months later, I find myself daydreaming about my time in New York, I cant help but to think of all of the wonderful people I had the chance to gel with in less than three days! NYFW easily gives off gases of inspiration and drive on it's own but there's nothing like surrounding yourself with those who sprint towards their dreams ; allowing nothing but passion and God to lead the way.
I had the pleasure of meeting designer extrodonaire Rueben Reuel at the Emerging Designers show and boy did he understand me! There's a ton of fashion bloggers, designers, here, there, shoot EVERYWHERE! But there's those people who we all know will shine standing in a room filled with darkness and Rueben is one of those people. If you haven't taken the time to lay your eyes on such a lavishing collection of luxury such as Demestiks New York you're definitely missing out. WARNING: If you don't want to look "too African" allow us to have a moment of silence for such a shallow thought and your lack of individuality. Besides if Rueben has Beyonce under his belt, I think he's doing a pretty good job. This isn't just another boutique...THIS is FASHION honey. Get some!
Reuben took the time out to interview with YSB...Check out what he had to say:
SB:Describe the woman who wear Demestiks New York.
RR:The Demestiks New York woman is confident, classy, sexy, and chic. She is not afraid to be noticed.
YSB:Describe your creative space (what does it look like, how does it smell, is it hold/cold).
RR: Creative space is very colorful and warm. Everyday I burn Lavender oil throughout the work space which helps to keep calm and focused.
YSB: When do you feel inspired the most?
RR: I feel inspired the most when I am searching for fabrics. When I choose fabrics I feel like they tell me what they want to be made into.
YSB: What does Demestiks New York represent?
RR: Demestiks New York represents beauty, independence, and class.
YSB: If you could work with anyone in the world, who would it be?
RR: If I could could work with another designer it would have to be Diane von Furstenberg. She understands women in a very deep way and I would love to ask her several questions about her life and business.
YSB: When did you discover that you weren't like everyone else?
RR: When I was very young. I just knew there was a gift inside of me that I needed to share with the world.
YSB: Do you believe that it's important to be understood?
RR:I always say, " In a relationship of any sort, understanding is very important. It doesn't mean you agree with it, but you do understand ." So yes it is very important to be understood."
YSB: What is the most challenging thing about being a designer?
RR: Trying to be as authentic as possible is a challenge . We all know nothing is new under the sun and everything had been done before.
YSB: What are some words that you live by?
RR: " Live to create, create to live."
YSB: What's next for your brand?
RR:I am working on a home goods line. I am currently in the developing stages.
YSB: Tell me, how did all of this begin?
RR: In 2012 I was let go from my job. I received unemployment money and invested it into buying fabric, made the samples myself and funding my first photoshoot. I opened an online store through Easy and the rest is history. People discovered my designs through Etsy and wanted to know more about the designs and fabric. It's been a long 3 1/2 year journey but I am a very thankful to God for both the ups and downs.
